In-house design will allow for this from time to time (if you’re lucky) but your role will typically be using design to optimize or improve existing product rather than dream up new products. Agencies on the other hand will often be hired to dream up new concepts for others. While the end result might not always be a truly innovative design, the process is more conducive for a visionary designer craving that space to experiment.
