Oh no ruffled feathers here! This is exactly the dialog I hope comes out of articles like these.It’s tough when I write on these topics because I want to cover it fairly but there is also a lot more factors that I don’t cover.

To your point, I have become more aware of how closed networks form as I moved away from being a job seeker to becoming an employer. While I find myself to be a huge advocate of inclusion and diversity, I personally have experienced just how un-diverse a network can become without being actively aware of it and intentional about diversity. And to your point, even for those who may not consider themselves biased, it can start to creep in over time when you unconsciously surround yourself with people that are like you.

If I were writing this to employers — the directors and managers — I’d be advocating much different activities. I believe that changes will come from the top and bottom but those in power obviously have more power to create systemic change. As a result those in hiring positions should be taking this on as a charter and devote significant time reaching outside their networks.
